Every morning I wake up to the same routine. I log into the Tinder account of a year-old man from Texas—a client. Men and women though mostly men from all over the world pay this company to outsource the labor and tedium of online dating. But as e-romance hits an all-time high, our daily dose of rejection, harassment, and heartbreak creeps upward, too. When I tell people that I work as an online-dating assistant, their initial reaction is of morbid curiosity. I received a callback three days later. Was I dating anyone currently?

The rhetoric of modernity, education, and progress is a powerful one that deludes us into thinking that regressive and repressive aspects of match-making are either a thing of the past, the rural, or the uneducated and uninformed. Denting this urban self-fashioning is the Netflix series Indian Matchmaking , which has held up a mirror to Indian society. Rather, it has shown how casteism and sexism merge with money, high-status, and modernity in the urban milieus of Mumbai, Delhi, New York, and Chicago.
Crucially, they consider their role as not limited to suggesting matches but of also undertaking a maternalistic paternalistic approach by advising prospective brides and grooms to change their attitudes and expectations in order to have a happy married life. Most important, this series has brought attention to an oft-repeated woe that the onus of sustaining the marriage squarely falls on women.
That is the value we have been brought up with. Prospective grooms, on the other hand, are disconcertingly presented as reluctant men, who are to be cajoled and emotionally manipulated by their mothers, sisters into even agreeing to meet a prospective bride. No such reluctance, however, is shown on part of the women, who are mainly depicted as eager brides. This show has generated much debate on social media and has been criticised for promoting problematic standards in matchmaking.
Given that my doctoral research was on the matchmaking practices of urban Indians, I can say that this show is not far from reality. We are perhaps uncomfortable and angry because this show has said it as it is, and has done so on a global platform, leaving little scope for pretence. This is, of course, not to say that there are no inter-caste, inter-class marriages, or marriages where women are happy along with having successful careers.

The Postmaster General could not, for example, tell Democratic Rep. Katie Porter how much a postcard cost or roughly how many people, in the tens of millions, voted by mail in the previous cycle. He confirmed to Rep. Ayanna Pressley that he had instituted a push for early retirement and instituted a hiring freeze at the management level, but denied that these reductions would continue to slow down mail delivery.
And while he stressed multiple times that Americans need not worry about getting their mail-in ballots delivered in time, he admitted to Democratic Rep.

Five Guys A Week does exactly what it says on the tin as a woman invites five potential suitors into her home so they can live together in some kind of bizarre, polyamorous-but-not state as they fight over her affection. Brutally dumping a new man every morning after they cook her breakfast a vibe we can get behind , the show eventually ends at the end of the week when one man remains — after beating off their opponents and winning her heart. The woman is in charge the entire way in this relationship crash course in extremely close quarters.
Each man has their own unique brand of wooing as a result of their personalities, which comes with varying degrees of success — and a lot of hilarity. It means it comes out in increasingly stupid ways, like a fight over who gets to make sure the mushrooms are cooked properly in the morning. Though this writer is drawing the line at the idea of five men living in a house like that not to mention the camera crew … can you imagine the state of that bathroom?! Follow Metro.

There is only one country whose men and only men I try to avoid: Germany. What have German men ever done to deserve this? A friend of mine who has been in a long term relationship with a German man recently told me that if she wanted to have sex with him, she would write him an email informing him of her desire and the two would take it from there. I wish I was making this up.

Attention, singles fed up with the travails of Tinder: there’s a new dating app apparently aimed at Ivy League students and graduates, because this world just doesn’t have enough dating apps — or elitism — already. Yes, you heard right: a forthcoming matchmaking app called The League , founded by Stanford MBA student Amanda Bradford , promises to keep its dating pool “well-balanced and high-quality” by weeding out supposedly unsuitable bachelors and bachelorettes via an unexplained screening metric.
Although The League is not the first dating app to court elite students and those who want to date them , the app’s website pitch to woo applicants is a real doozy:. You don’t need a dating app to get a date -— you’re too popular as it is. But you should join The League. Praise the online dating gods for answering our prayers. Because that was totally keeping us up at night. The League is due to roll out first in San Francisco; other cities will follow suit depending on demand, the company says.
